Redemption Windows Virus

07.16.2010 · Posted in Email Marketing

The Redemption virus asks the user whether or not he wants the virus to infect files in various directories. In addition to this, it changes the desktop on October 29th. This virus was likely one of the first written by a member of the virus writing group 29A, as it displays the “Hello World!” text when it is run. Hello World is one of the most common phrases a new programmer learns how to display.

How come I didn’t see this video before? This is probably the first virus (also just a proof of concept) made specifically for Win32, by Jacky Qwerty, a member of the group 29A (666 in hex). Definitely a historical one! =)

more info: it will pick random folders from the root directory of the hard drive. If you tell it YES, then it will list a couple of random files asking if you want to infect them. If you say yes, then it modifies the file. If you run the file, it loads another copy of itself and should then load the file.
